According to L'Equipe, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee unanimously expressed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Thursday.
Infantino's controversial proposal to privatize the World Cup has drawn considerable attention, and the position of the African Football Confederation (CAF) stands in stark contrast to that of UEFA and CONCACAF. However, Infantino still enjoys significant support within his own camp. The CAF Executive Committee on Thursday unanimously reaffirmed its support for the FIFA president, thus ensuring Infantino's continued reliance on African nations.
Over the past few days, various continental football federations have issued statements regarding the FIFA president's proposal to open the market to private investors, with UEFA and CONCACAF (Constitution of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) particularly demanding that he abandon the plan. Now, the matter has been resolved, with Infantino issuing a public apology on Wednesday. CAF President Motsepe stated in a post-meeting statement that this apology was "welcome." CAF also agreed that "respect for governance, formal procedures, and transparency is crucial and non-negotiable." Infantino's situation has become even more precarious due to these developments; he convened a crisis meeting in Morocco on Wednesday, but several figures, including FIFA's third-ranking official, Lamour, were absent.
